Going Upstream
by Michael J. Banks, Ph.D.
“Going upstream” is a metaphor for addressing challenges at their source rather than merely reacting to symptoms. Imagine standing by a river where people keep floating downstream in distress. You could stay where you are and keep pulling them out — or you could walk upstream to discover what’s causing them to fall in.
The same is true in our emotional and relational lives. Lasting change often begins by understanding the origins of stress, fear, or conflict — not just managing the fallout.
When we go upstream in our own stories, we uncover patterns that have shaped our responses for years. Through awareness and courage, we can make new choices that restore peace and strength.
